  3. New enhancements/bug fixes include:

  5. 1. This is the first version of Gopher Surfer that works with Apple
  6.    Computer's AppleSearch software to provide full-text search capabilities
  7.    for Mac-based Gopher servers. This means that there is an alternative to 
  8.    running WAIS search engines on Unix systems for those that want to avoid 
  9.    Unix, or take advantage of the setup and administration utilities that Apple
  10.    includes as part of AppleSearch. If you are already running an AppleSearch 
  11.    server, you might also use gopher client software and Gopher Surfer to make 
  12.    the information on the AppleSearch server accessible to non-Macintosh
  13.    systems (or available via a TCP/IP network).

  15.    For more information on AppleSearch setup and use please read the
  16.    'AppleSearch Info' file in this directory.
  17.  
  18. 2. Fixed a bug that would cause the server to die if it received
  19.    some types of requests.

  25. New enhancements/bug fixes include:

  27. 1. The Gopher's Helper stack has been retired.  All of its
  28.    functionality has been added to the server in the form
  29.    of a Preview option.  While Previewing it is possible to
  30.    change the type or display name advertised for an item.
  31.  
  32.    And finally the administrator can create either Gopher or
  33.    Gopher+ links to other servers.
  34.  
  35.    By placing the link creation facilities in the application,
  36.    links no longer require a place holder file.  With Gopher's
  37.    Helper a place-holder file was required so something would show.
  38.    Then a link file would be created to contain the information
  39.    about the remore host.  Such as port number, selector etc.
  40.       
  41.    This is not necessary anymore.  So for a link you will see a
  42.    file named something like 'filename#'(# = option-<8> character)
  43.    but the place holder file called 'filename' is not needed.
  44.                
  45.    I am using the term 'link' to mean a reference to something on
  46.    another gopher server.  Not a connection to your own server.
  47.                  
  48.    This is a one-time deal.  A version number has been introduced into
  49.    the link files to allow for easy upgrades in the future.

  53.    Unfortunately, all links must this once be recreated from scratch.
  54.    It will be necessary to re-do all links to other servers.
  55.  
  56.    As well as those items where you used the Gopher's Helper to
  57.    change the name displayed to a connecting client.  Or the 
  58.    type displayed to the connecting client.
  59.  
  60.    In the process of fixing the links problem I decided to add a
  61.    number to the link files.  In the future this will make it easy to
  62.    upgrade these files with no user intervention.  For instance when
  63.    AppleSearch support is added for full-text indexing.  ;-)

  65. 2. Administrator selection of directory to publish.

  67. 3. Logging to a file the following information for
  68.    each connection:
  69.  
  70.      Connection number
  71.      Time/Date
  72.      Host or IP address where request originated from.
  73.      Selector string sent from client
  74.  
  75.   All nicely tab separated so it can be summarized in your favorite
  76. spread sheet.
  77.  
  78. 4. Tabbing through the configuration fields now correctly selects
  79.    the full text of the next field.  Also it completely removes the
  80.    cursor from the previous field.  No more ghost insertion cursors.

  91. domain name of your host, example - 
  92. boombox.micro.umn.edu, and what port it is
  93. running on.  Also which items are causing
  94. problems.  If I can test your server directly
  95. it is easier to isolate the bugs remaining.

  104. 2.  Warning if you close the configuration window
  105.     that the server is suspending operation.
  106. 3.  Ability to erase the log window without closing
  107.     the window or quitting.
  108. 4.  Write your favorite feature here and send me
  109.     some mail describing it and why it would be a
  110.     good thing to have.  I'm easy to convince as
  111.     long as it doesn't require the assitance of
  112.     an electrician or a plumber.  :-)

  118. Bug Fixes/Changes in version 1.0b3
  119. ----------------------------------

  121. 1.  Long names for directories were not correctly
  122. advertised to connecting clients.  They showed as
  123. a file instead of a directory.  Attempts to fetch
  124. this 'file' resulted in the Gopher Surfer complaining
  125. and possibly crashing  The client would also display
  126. an ugly warning (TurboGopher) saying it didn't have
  127. enough memory.
  128.  
  129. 2.  The Gopher Surfer now works correctly with clients
  130. that make use of the Gopher+ long views.  The clients
  131. which I know to rely on this feature include the unix
  132. client we distribute with the Gopher+ unix distribution
  133. and also the HGopher client for windows.
  134.  
  135. 3.  The Gophers Helper G+ now correctly selects and
  136. modifies the line you click on.  There was a bug
  137. dealing with some file types.
  138.  
  139. 4.  The Gopher's helper treats all files now similar
  140. to how the Gopher Surfer treats them.  In other words
  141. if it recognizes the file type it advertises it as the
  142. appropriate gopher type.  If it is unrecognized but
  143. has a resource fork it is displayed as a Binhex gopher
  144. type.  Exactly as the Gopher Surfer application does.  
  145. Otherwise it advertises it as a text file.

  157. This is a once only hardship.  I have implemented
  158. a version number in the settings file for future
  159. easy upgrades as new information is added to the
  160. settings document
  161.

  163. 1.  The following is now saved as part of the server
  164.     document:

  166.     Run gopher server - So it is possible to place an
  167.     alias or actual settings document in startup folder
  168.     to have server auto launch on startup.  The directory
  169.     offered from Gopher Surfer is directory where the
  170.     application is located.

  172.     ISO Latin-1 characters - Saves this setting
  173.     between restarts.
  174.  
  175.     Log by host names - Saves this setting
  176.     between restarts.

  178. 2.  Added support for Video/MPEG files.

  180. 3.  Tweaked TurboGopher to also have support for
  181.     Video/MPEG.  Placed Sparkle 1.6 in the TurboGopher
  182.     Helper applications folder.  Very nice MPEG
